“ Imagine a late 19th-century Forte dei Marmi, wild and unspoiled, which becomes the perfect vacation spot for a colony of German artists and landowners.

If you add that atmosphere of “primitive paradise” to the beauty of the place and Dr. Vanzetti’s heliotherapy treatments, that’s it!

The Germans bought plots of land on the beach at a low price, and began to build their stunning villas, surrounded by the many pine groves and with direct access to the sea – the seafront avenue would be built only in the 1920s.

On those summer days, walking on the beach, you could stumble on Isolde Kurz reciting poetry, Boecklin painting and a piano on the sea to cheer everyone up with music.

The locals called these Germans “savages” alluding to their lifestyle, so different and libertine. Just think that they used to stay naked on the beach, and the mayor of Pietrasanta (Forte dei Marmi was then part of Pietrasanta municipality) made numerous orders to invite these tourists to moralize.
